Launched in 1993, Safaricom was originally a department of the government owned Kenya Posts & Telecommunications Corporation. The company was incorporated as a private limited company in 1997 and became a public limited company in 2002. In 2000, Vodafone Plc (of London) bought 40% of the company with the government retaining 60% through Telekom Kenya. As of 2008, Safaricom is the leading mobile phone operator in Kenya with about 8 million subscribers and is also one of the most profitable in East Africa. The shares started trading on the NSE on June 9th 2008.
